If you have an epidural in labour, do you feel pain at all?

With an epidural, a fine plastic tube is placed in your lower back just outside the spinal cord, through which local anaesthetic and an opiate drug (often fetanyl) are injected. Assuming the epidural is working properly and evenly, you normally don't feel the pain of contractions, but may feel the sensation of contractions.
