Is it normal for the baby not to show up on an ultrasound at 6 weeks?

At 6 weeks, a scan should show the fetus (which looks like a tiny baked bean) within a gestation sac, the heart beat and a circular 'bubble like' structure called the yolk sac. However, if the pregnancy is only 5 weeks you may only be able to see a gestation sac as the fetus may be too small to see. So what you see is critically dependent on how far on your pregnancy is; if a scan is inconclusive you'd normally have a further scan arranged 7-10 days later.
