What does it mean when blood is found in your urine?

Blood can be found in your urine if you have a urinary tract infection (sometimes called cystitis). Normally in this situation a sample of your urine would be sent for investigation in a microbiology lab to check for bacteria and white blood cells. You can also have blood in your urine due to contamination if you have had any recent vaginal bleeding, or even from a 'show' in late pregnancy.
