I am 5 weeks pregnant and my blood test shows a low progesterone level. I have been given vaginal progesterone suppositories; are they safe?

Progesterone is produced from the developing placental unit, and it has been used for many years to try to ''support'' an early pregnancy. There is no clear evidence that it works but it is very unlikely to be harmful. The potential problem is that a low progesterone level can suggest the possibility that an early regnancy is failing to develop; giving extra may not solve this.
