My girlfriend has just found out she is 5 months pregnant and has been taking birth contol the whole time-what will the effect be on the baby and what should be done?

This depends on the method of birth control. The combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) is not likely to cause a problem with the developing baby. The mini-pill, or progesterone based contraceptives may lead to a high level of this hormone in the baby which can theoretically lead to transient ''virilizing'' features (making a female baby having some male features). Although this is unlikely, it is still worth getting further specialist fetal medicine advice.
