I have a 4 month old son and have just found out that I am pregnant again. Obviously this is not the most sensible thing to have happened, but I'm determined to now make the best of it. What I am most concerned about is looking after myself because of the wear and tear on my body. I obviously intend to keep as fit as possible and to eat healthily but wondered if there are any other things you would suggest I do.

Well, congratulations! Eating well and exercising are important, as is a positive mental attitude at the start of pregnancy. Specifically, however, if you were anaemic in your last pregnancy and/or have been breastfeeding, you should ask your doctor or midwife for a haemoglobin blood test if you feel 'washed out'. It is probably not too late to start taking folic acid (folate) supplements, and if you are smoking, try to cut down or stop!
