What is HELLP syndrome?

HELLP syndrome is a severe variant form of pre-eclampsia. The ''H'' stands for Haemolysis (damage and break up of red blood cells), ''EL'' for Elevated Liver enzymes, and ''LP'' for low platelet levels. It may occur after delivery, and needs to be treated in a specialist unit where complications can be dealt with. While in most cases, the condition gets better on its own or after delivery, some mothers with this condition are at risk of kidney and liver damage, or even death.
