Why do I need to be checked six weeks after the birth?

It takes months to recover from pregnancy and birth, and the six week check is a good time to assess how things are getting back to normal and that you are coping OK both physically and emotionally. It is also important that you consider or restart using contraception and by six weeks after the birth, you will be suitable for most types of contraception. At this time, a cap can be fitted, coil put in, or cervical smear should be done if it is due. It is a good time to check your haemoglobin, especially if you were anaemic before pregnancy and are breastfeeding.
