What's the difference in "baby blues" and postnatal depression?

Baby blues occurs in about 30% of women at about 72 hours after birth; it causes tearfulness and general upset but goes away without treatment after a few days. Depression is a clinical condition which affects one in ten women after birth; some of these may be seriously affected for weeks, months or years. It may be unrecognised in those that do not consult their doctor. But it may need tablets or more major treatment often under the care of a specially trained psychiatrist.
