What is mastitis, and how do I know if I''ve got it?

Mastitis is inflammation and infection in one of the milk ducts caused by a blockage of milk that did not drain. You will know you have it because you will feel feverish and your breast will be extremely painful, and red and blotchy. You will need antibiotics to treat the infection. Contact your doctor or midwife as soon as you feel there is something wrong so you can be treated as quickly as possible because as well as being painful to you, feeding will be difficult.
