What is the rooting reflex and how do I get the baby to do it?

The rooting reflex is simply that if you tease the edges of your baby''s mouth and lips, there is an instinctive reflex that means the baby will open their mouth. It is used when trying to commence feeding. Rub your nipple lightly over the baby''s lips and wait for her to open her mouth then offer the breast and the baby in theory should latch on. It takes a bit of time, but the rooting reflex is there to help with feeding.
