How long should a feed last?

Difficult one, because with good sucking from a plentiful source the baby could suck as much as it needs in 5 mins but will then continue to suckle for comfort. There is no absolute time scale but as a guide, 5-10 mins each side, depending on how hard or fast your baby sucks, is probably enough. In truth, time is not the way to ascertain success in this instant. A crying hungry baby who is almost asleep after six minutes of sucking with milk dribbling down her chin is a much clearer indication of success than the fact she feeds for six minutes.
