I have heard horror stories about forceps...I dread needing one.

Yes..so have we... but in the present day the ''high'' forceps in these stories are not used. If forceps are tried and not thought to be appropriate, the obstetrician wouldn''t just keep trying, you will normally be offered a Caesarean.
