Why does labour take longer if it is my first baby?

Probably because it is the first time that your body has done this. It takes time for your ligaments and muscles to stretch, allowing the bones of the pelvis to open out and relax a bit. Also, initially, the muscle of your womb does not always co-ordinate the contractions very well in your first labour, this is usually better in subsequent labours.
