What happens if I'm staying in hospital after the baby is born?

After all the labour ward work is complete, your midwife will take you and your baby to the post natal ward (usually the floor above/below/beside the labour ward) where you will be introduced to the staff, found a bed for you and a cot for baby, and settled in. The ward staff will want to check you and your baby briefly for themselves. Then you will be helped feed or allowed to rest, whatever you and your baby want. It is at this stage your partner will be encouraged to go home and try to sleep for a bit.
