Why do I have to wait six hours to go home after the baby is born?

You go home straight from the labour ward and the six hours are neccessary for several reasons. Firstly, it will take this time to ensure there are no immediate complications following the delivery, to check your baby and yourself, to make sure you have been able to wee, to assist you with feeding, allow you to shower and change and finally, to get the paperwork done so the labour ward can forward details to the community midwives, in time for them to visit you within the first 24 hours that you are home.
