What does the baby check involve?

The check is done to establish that all is normal and to identify anything which is not. Your baby will be physically examined while naked, to ensure all ''bits'' are there and no extras, for example fingers or toes. Weight and length will be measured. Identifying marks noted. Response, breathing, colour, heart rate and muscle tone will all be checked. Then your baby will be cleaned, dressed and returned to you, with identification labels in place. If you agree to your baby having Vitamin K, it will be given at this stage. The midwife will then help you to try to breast feed if this is your choice.
