What is ''bonding'', and when does it start?

Bonding is a concept from the 1970''s where the idea was that the most likely time to initiate a good relationship with your new born is within the first few hours of life. This is fine if the circumstances allow this, but it is an unproven theory and many parents whose babies had to be whisked off to the special care unit, or when a mum had to go through a Caesarean for whom immediate bonding is not possible, still manage to develop excellent relationships with their children. So don''t get too hung up on this slightly obscure concept!
