Will I tear when the baby's head comes out?

It's impossible to predict, but most first time mums, or those with a large baby, tear a little because the vaginal tissue is not used to stretching. Try not too worry about this. It sounds awful but at the time it occurs you won't really feel it as you are concentrating on your baby coming out. Small tears heal OK on their own, larger ones may need stitches. Sometimes, a midwife or doctor may need to make a small cut to allow baby's head to pop out easily, this is known as an episiotomy.
