How do I know that I have made it to the end of first stage?

The midwife may probably tell you as she is very clever at listening to the changes in your breathing and ''grunting''. These changes are instinctive at this stage as a desire to push develops. This will need to be confirmed by an internal examination that confirms your cervix has completely dilated (ie opened to 10cm diameter) and the baby is in the right delivery postion. Instinct will also play a part, as you become highly tuned in to the changes in you body. Perhaps you will think you need to poo, suddenly have a desire to adopt one particular postion or an urge to push are all indicators in late first stage that changes are afoot.
