How will I know if I am in real labour?

With difficulty, especially if it''s your first! but try not to worry, all you are expected to do is contact your doctor, midwife or hospital when you feel something different is happening. The midwife will then guide you as to what to do, based on what you have told her. Towards the end of pregnancy you can experience ''Braxton Hicks'' pains which mimic labour pains but the difference is that your cervix remains closed. These can be painful and last for up to two minutes each but will gradually ease rather than increase. An internal examination of your cervix is the only way to confirm labour, and the information you give the midwife will help her decide if this needs to be done. If your waters break, or you have a heavy, bloody show or have regular painful contractions which occur over a couple of hours, you may be starting off in labour. Contact your hospital, doctor or midwife for advice if you have any of these symptoms.
