Will I feel much pain in the first stage of labour?

The degree of pain will vary depending on your pain threshold, how tired or hungry you are, and the length and severity of your contractions. The pain usually starts of mild and builds up to being most intense at the end of the first stage, allowing you time to ''acclimatise''. You can, of course, ask for pain relief to either reduce (eg pethidine, diamorphine) or abolish (eg epidural anaesthetic) the contraction pains.
