What signs should I look out for if labour is starting?

There are several associated signs that labour may be about to start. These include persistent low backache, a feeling of nausea, mild contractions and a 'show' of blood streaked mucus which comes from your vagina, (this can occur weeks before labour), a loss of fluid from your vagina suggesting waters may have broken. There is only one concrete sign however, and that is that your cervix has started to open (dilate) as a result of regular contractions. This can only be confirmed by an internal examination by a doctor or midwife.
