Since becoming pregnant, I seem to suffer with constipation. Why?

This is very common, due mainly to hormonal changes and the weight of the pregnancy on the back. There are several ways in which you can help yourself, such as eating a diet high in fruit, vegetables, and fibre. Drinking plenty of fluids, preferably water, to keep you hydrated, as dehydration may be a contributory factor to your constipation. Some forms of iron supplements may increase your tendency to constipation, try taking the supplement with fruit juice as this aids absorbption of iron while at the same time, eases constipation symptoms. If you find this to be the case, it may be necessary to change your diet or iron supplement type. Your midwife/GP can tell you about the other types of iron available.
