How do I tell the hospital what we want in labour?

The best way is to start writing down your wishes about all aspects of your labour that can be discussed with your obstetrician or midwife at antenatal visits. This information can then be written up in what is commonly known as a BIRTH PLAN. This is a written record of how, ideally, you would wish to see your labour and delivery handled. It should be flexible and not ''concrete'', as labour has an unknown aspect to it. Being open to change and suggestion will help ensure that you do not end up disappointed and defeated when things do not turn out has you had planned. When writing one, remember to check with your midwife that what you like is possible from the outset, for example there is no point in requesting to give birth in water, if the hospital where you intend to deliver does not have this facility.
