I've had a completely normal pregnancy, but I just don't want to go through a normal delivery. Can I insist on having a Caesarean?

'Informed mother's Choice' is the thrust of modern maternity care. However, there are of course limits to this in most healthcare systems throughout the world. Obstetricians have no problems in performing a Caesarean as long as there is a reasonable Obstetric or Medical need for this. Caesareans are not generally offered routinely for the following reasons: (1) it means a stay in hospital of at least 5 days instead of 1 or 2 after a vaginal delivery; (2) you will be somewhat weaker after a Caesarean than a vaginal delivery, and have a sore tummy where the incision was; (3) a Caesarean, although generally very safe, is more risky for you than a vaginal delivery (for example pulmonary embolus ie 'clot on the lung' is commoner);(4) the costs of Caesarean section are much higher than that of a vaginal delivery and (5) it may affect the way you deliver your future babies. So, before making any fixed plans, it is best to discuss all the factors behind your reason for wanting a Caesarean with your Obstetrician.
