Why does my body need more iron now that I am pregnant?

The need for extra iron in pregnancy arises because as your blood circulation increases, your body produces more red blood cells, and iron is a major constituent of the haemoglobin part of the red cells. The baby needs iron for many aspects of its development and as part of its own blood system; this requirement is greatest in the last four weeks of pregnancy.
