What is a Doppler scan?

Doppler ultrasound is a special ultrasound test that gives information about blood flow. It can be used to look at the flow in your blood vessels that supply the placenta (uterine artery Doppler) which can pick up women who are at higher risk of developing pre-eclampsia later in their pregnancies. In babies that are small or may be at risk, Doppler ultrasound of the baby''s blood vessels (fetal Doppler) can be useful in assessing their state of health. This takes longer and is a specialist test usually undertaken by a fetal medicine specialist doctor.
