Under what circumstances should I have an HIV test?

If you are from a country where HIV is very prevalent or if your partner past or present was at risk of HIV, or if you injected drugs and shared needles then you may be at risk of HIV and may want to consider a test. Your first action should be to arrange to speak to someone who can counsel you, and put your personal level of risk into perspective. Confidential tests can be arranged through many antenatal or genito-urinary (GU) clinics. It is now illegal for insurance companies to discriminate against you if you have simply had a test which proved negative.
