My blood group is Rhesus negative: can this be a problem for my baby?

Throughout pregnancy and at delivery, small amounts of the baby''s blood may escape into your circulation and these blood cells will be recognised as ''foreign'' by your immune system. If you are Rhesus negative and the baby''s blood group is positive then your body will produce specific antibodies to these blood cells. This is highly unlikely to cause a problem in your first pregnancy, but might in future pregnancies when your antibodies could attack the baby''s blood cells. This is prevented if Rhesus negative mothers are given a special injection of ''Anti-D'' at delivery or if there is vaginal bleeding at any stage of pregnancy.
