What is fetal alcohol syndrome?

Fetal alcohol syndrome can affect your baby if you drink regularly, and heavily, in your pregnancy. The major features are a combination of poor fetal growth (ie small baby), heart defects, cleft palate, widely spaced eyes, depressed bridge of the nose. It can often be diagnosed only after delivery. One giveaway is that the placenta looks very white on an ultrasound scan.
