Before I knew I was pregnant, I drank a lot of alcohol. Will this harm the baby?

It's unlikely to cause problems unless you are a regular heavy drinker. The likelihood of the baby being affected from a one off alcoholic binge-especially if very early in pregnancy (4-6 weeks) is very small. However, regular heavy alcohol intake can cause 'fetal alcohol syndrome', a condition causing physical and developmental abnormalities. Detailed ultrasound scans can be done to see if the baby has been affected, but not until later in the pregnancy. Another problem for heavy drinkers is that often their diet is low in essential vitamins, this deficiency could affect the baby.
