I have been told that sperm can start off labour. Is it true and if so, how?

Yes, if sperm comes in contact with the neck of your womb (cervix) at the end of pregnancy, when you are due or overdue, it can help start labour by ripening the cervix and causing it to open up. Sperm contains a hormone called prostaglandin in its natural form. If the doctors need to start off your labour for whatever reason they will usually begin by trying to ripen your cervix with manufactured prostaglandins. So sex can do what the doctors will try to do medically, when attempting to start your labour. Be reassured that sex is most unlikely to cause you to go into premature labour, as this ripening of your cervix usually only happens when it is ready at term.
