Why do I sometimes feel light-headed when I breathe quickly?

In pregnancy, your breathing speeds up anyway, but you may feel short of breath and therefore make yourself breathe even more rapidly. This is called hyperventilation, and because you have reduced the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream, you can feel light-headed, develop tingling in your fingers and toes and faint. The answer is to try hard to slow your breathing right down when you notice yourself breathing quickly.
