My breathing seems very quick now I''m 28 weeks pregnant, is this normal?

Your lungs have to adapt to the increase in energy requirements of your pregnant body. This is because your metabolism increases considerably so more carbon dioxide being produced and needs to be cleared by your lungs. At the same time your body''s oxygen requirement is increasing. To enable this to happen, your lungs increase their ventilation capacity by about 40%. This is achieved largely by the lung increasing the volume of gas inhaled and exhaled per breath and there is also a small increase in your breathing rate. It is likely that progesterone, which is produced from the placenta, is the hormone mainly responsible for these effects.
