I have just been told at my 20 week anomaly scan that there is a pericardial effusion measuring max 2.4mm. I have been referred for a more detailed scan in 3 weeks time. I know that they normally look for this measurement to be less than 2mm. Is 2.4mm high? What is considered high, medium low?

A pericardial effusion is a collection of fluid between baby's heart and the pericardium-which is the 'bag' that contains and protects the heart itself. There is always a small amount of fluid between the heart and pericardium anyway. At 20 weeks, some experts would take 2mm as the cut off, others would take 3mm. So 2.4mm is an 'in between' measurement-and providing baby looks otherwise normal on scan, it is most probably normal.
