Would a doctor ever let a pregancy go 44 weeks?

This is very unlikely: firstly, it is extremely unlikely that you would ever get to 44 weeks without going into labour. Secondly, placental function declines significantly after 40 weeks, and certainly beyond 42 weeks, so waiting until 44 weeks (assuming labour didn't start in the meantime) would risk the baby and not be recommended by the vast majority of obstetricians.
