I'm 34 weeks pregnant, why has the skin of my neck got so dark?

This is most likely a common and completely benign condition called chloasma, where excess melanin (the dark pigment in special cells in your skin) is deposited in the skin. It can cause irregular brown patches on the neck, face and other parts of your body too. This will often worsen if you expose your skin to UV light-for example bright sunlight. There are topical creams and ointments that can be used to reduce the colouration, however some are not recommended in pregnancy and the patches will fade within a few months after you've given birth.
