What is polyhydramnios?

Polyhydramnios is an excess of amniotic fluid. Amniotic fluid is fetal urine and surrounds baby, and it is measured by ultrasound scan. The commonest cause of polyhydramnios is 'idiopathic', ie there is nothing obviously wrong with baby or you. Less common are gestational diabetes, or a swallowing problem with baby that prevents the amniotic fluid being recycled.
