I visited my midwife today-I'm 27 wks. She heard the heartbeat with a hand held Doppler monitor at bottom and top of bump. Could this be twins?

We're sure that you have had at least one ultrasound scan-so if they didn't tell you you were having twins then it is impossible that they could suddenly appear! It is however quite common with a hand held fetal heart listening device for there to be several positions over your womb where baby's heart can be heard, even giving the impression of several heartbeats.
