I've been thinking about asking for an epidural-will this affect my baby in any way? Will it slow the labour down?

An epidural anaesthetic is an excellent method of pain relief in labour. It shouldn't affect baby, and won't slow down the first stage of labour, but can slightly slow the second stage-active pushing, as you may not be able to feel the contractions well depending on how well the epidural is working. Your midwife can help by feeling your tummy and telling you when a contraction is coming.
