Why is it common to become anaemic in the second trimester of pregnancy?
Your blood volume increases by approximately 50% from the beginning to the end of pregnancy; most of this increase occurs in the second trimester. This is a normal process and means that the remaining red blood cells become ''diluted''. If compounded with a lack of iron, which is essential for the production of red blood cells, this may cause true anaemia.
