How do I get a MAT B1?

The MAT B1 is a UK certificate that is issued by your midwife or GP after 20 weeks of pregnancy. It is your proof to your employer that you are pregnant-and how far along your pregnancy is, to calculate when you can take maternity leave. It must be given to your employer 3 weeks ahead of when you intend to take maternity leave; in practice this is from 26 weeks if you intend to take maternity leave from 29 weeks. To be eligible for maternity benefits you are expected to have worked for 26 weeks into a pregnancy-but you should not worry if you have had medical conditions that meant you couldn't, or baby is born early. The test in employment law is how long your employment would have lasted, not how long it did.
