My skin seems to change colour and look patchy, is this OK?

This is a side effect of pregnancy, and is mainly because of the effect of oestrogens on the melanin (dark pigment) producing cells on the skin. The colour change will occur where your skin is already darker such as freckles and birthmarks. On your face you may develop a darker area around your forehead, nose, mouth and chin called chloasma (the ''mask of pregnancy''). These changes are harmless and will fade once the baby is born. You will also see a line appear from your belly button to the top of your pubic bone, called linea nigra, which will also fade after delivery. If you sit out in the sun you may find that you tan or burn more readily so take care. Other areas prone to darkening are under your arms and your nipples.
