I am 9 weeks and am taking Lamictal 100g x 2 daily for my epilepsy. I have heard all sorts of stories of how these drugs can effect the baby so I am desperate to know if my baby will be OK?

Lamictal is an anti epilepsy drug, otherwise known as lamotrigine. It has generally been considered to be reasonably safe, though some recent data suggests that there is an increased risk of cleft lip or palate in babies born to mums taking lamotrigine. It’s important to get this in perspective though; the risk of baby having cleft lip or palate was just under 1% (or 9 per 1000 babies), and other anti epilepsy drugs have similar or greater risks. Do don’t panic-baby is most likely fine. A detailed scan at 20 weeks where the sonographer will look at baby’s face carefully is the gold standard, however many fetal medicine units offer 16 week scans to women taking anti-epilepsy drugs so if you want an earlier scan see if you can get referred.
