My urine has been dark and/or cloudy for around 8 weeks. My urine sample showed traces of blood and protein but my midwife said I should wait for another 6 weeks to give another sample before I worry about it. Should I insist that it gets checked out?

Yes, definitely, your midwife or doctor should send a specimen of urine to the lab; you should see them ideally within the next day or two. You could well have a urine infection, especially if you have any symptoms of burning when you pass urine or needing to pass urine more frequently. If so you should have antibiotics as soon as possible.
Urine Tests

You will be asked to provide a urine specimen, which is tested by a nurse or midwife to check for possible irregularities.

Glucose (sugar) More than a trace of glucose may be a sign of diabetes. You may need a blood test.
Protein When this is found in quantity in the urine, it may signal a bladder or kidney infection, or preeclampsia.
Ketones These are substances, that if present, mean that the body''s metabolic system is upset, probably because you haven''t eaten enough or have vomited.
