Thalassaemia

A condition, common in Mediterranean countries and the Middle East, that affects the way haemoglobin in red blood cells is made. It causes anaemia and is known as alpha or beta, depending on which type of haemoglobin chain cannot be produced by your body. Thalassaemia ''Major'' is more serious than ''Minor'' as it implies that no normal haemoglobin is produced.)
