Glossary - Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle Cell Disease

A form of anaemia, commonest in Africa, in which the haemoglobin constituent of red blood cells is defective. This means that red blood cells ''buckle'' in certain situations (low oxygen, infections) and then get caught in small blood vessels, eventually becoming destroyed. This then leads to a lack of red blood cells.)
